The present paper deals with the histological study of the process of testis-ovum formation in adult males of Oryzias latipes following treatment with estrone. Experimental fishes were given subcutaneous implants of a small estrone pellet and kept at 20℃〜24℃. For histological study, gonads were fixed in Bouin's fixative and stained with Mayer's or Delafield's haematoxylin and eosin. Normal oogenesis and spermatogenesis were observed as compared with the process of the testisovum formation. Formation process of testis-ova was divided into four stages: Stages A, B, C and D. Spermatogonia at Stage A (Fig. 8), which are called "giant gonia, " appeared in the testes about three weeks after single implantation of an estrone pellet. Amount of cytoplasm was observed to increase at Stage B (Fig. 9) and Stage C (Fig. 10), and nuclear structures were also changed. Testis-ova at Stage D were covered with follicle-like layer (Figs. 12 and 13). From the present observations, it will be concluded that the process of testis-ovum formation resembles normal oogenesis and, however, some differences are observable between testis-ovum for-mation and oogenesis, so the nature of testis-ova is not always the same as that of oocytes in the ovary.
