1) One hundred and forty stocks of Paramecium calkinsi were isolated from the eight localities on the coast of the Inland Sea of Japan. The mating relations among them have been studied. 2) When the two cultures of the opposite mating types are mixed together, they immediately clump. Under appropriate conditions, the conjugating pairs in this mixture are formed in large proportion (100%). 3) Each stock has a characteristic range of optimum temperature for inducing conjugation, but this character is not peculiar to mating type. 4) Ordinarily, the animals produced only by successive fissions of a single individual do not mate with one another, but in some stocks, they undergo intra-clonal conjugation (selfing). In some cases, at least, it is conceivable that the mating type diversities within a clone appear during normal vegetative growth, though their origin is not yet clear.
