The incidence of the tumor in Drosophila melanogaster is affected by culture conditions such as temperature and nutrition. The tumor strains, st tu, cn tu, v tu, tu, and tu^g, were reared on vita-min- and amino acid-free media (Mittler's media) on which the following yeasts were cultivated, Hansenula anomala, Torulopsis utilis, or Rhodotorula gracilis. The culture was run at 25℃. The tumor incidence investigated is summarized in Table 2 and given graphically in Figure 1. It was found that the tumor formation was extremely inhibited under the influence of Rh. gracilis. Probably the reduction in tumor incidence in this case is not dependent upon a decrease of calorie, but seems to associate with deficiency of amino acid and vitamin in the cluture of this yeast. Further, it is deduced from the data here presented that the tumor incidence is rather in connection with eye-colour genes which are regulated by tryptophan metabolism.
