• 1. A kind of Liopeltis ocurring in Amami-oshima has been classified as a subspecies of Liopeltis, distinguished from Liopeltis semicarinata semicarinata in the former having fewer ventrals. 2. The author investigated fourteen samples from Amami-oshima and eighteen from the Okinawa Islands, finding that the ventral numbers of both groups are included in the similar range (Table 1). 3. The older investigators studied on a small number of samples showing the geographical variation to the greater extent. Accordingly, they seem to have made a mistake in the classification. These two growps should be included in one species and not different subspecies. Therefore, the scientific name of both groups should be corrected to be Liopeltis semicarinata.
