Using Spirostomum ambiguum, the writer observed the ciliary reversal and measured its duration. When a well preadapted organism in various concentrations of CaCl_2 was put into the mixtures of different ratio of CaCl_2 and KCI solutions or KCI solution, rhe ciliary reversal were induced and the organism moved backwards. Especially, in the case of the organism immersed in pure KCI solution, the strong ciliary reversal took place in every concentration of KCI solution (from 1/100 to 1/500 mol.). On the contrary, when a well preadapted organism in the solution of KCI was brought into the CaCl_2 solution or the above mentioned mixtures, the ciliary reversal was not induced. The induction of the ciliary reversal was influenced by the concentration of applied solutions. The duration of the ciliary reversal gradually increased in proportion to the concentration of the solution. While it varied in accordance with the ratio of Ca: K even in fixed concentration of the mixture, for instance, in the concentration of 1/150 mol. (CaCl_2) it showed two peaks (the ratio of 1 : 7 and 1 : 13 or 1 : 15) as is shown in Fig. 1. Therefore it is proved that the effects of K ions largely depend on the co-existing Ca ions.
