The eggs of Ayu (P. altivelis) are activated gradually in hypertonic (M/4) and isotonic (M/7) Ringer's solutions adjusted to pH 7.0-7.3 as has already been shown in my previous works. The activation of eggs is inhibited in isotonic Ringer's solution of alkaline side (pH=7.8-9.4). It is reversible within two or three hours, and it is accelerated in the same solution of acid side (pH=3.0-5.2). In the alkaline water (pH=8.6-9.8) also, the activation is more retarded than in tap water. Therefore, the activation of Ayu eggs is affected by hydrogen ion concentrations of outer media.
