The cephalic tracheal system has been observed with the help of an electron microscope. From the tracheal trunks arise very fine lateral branches to neighbouring parts of the head. The main substances of the breathing system of Drosophila melanogaster consists of elastic fibers, which are band-shaped in the trachea, but helically coiled in the bronchea and bronchioles.
