A snake, Natrix tigrina has integmental poison glands on the unchal region (Nakamura, '35). Ten mg. of the dried powder of the secretion of the gland was dissolved in 10cc of Ringer's solution, and each 0.1-0.2cc of the solution was injected into 23 white mice intraperitoneally and reactions of the poison on the animals were observed. About five minutes after the injection, the mouse became stable and slow in motions, then showed the motions of smelling or clearing of mouth. After about 40-60 minutes, the maximum reactions were observed. The mouse breathed hard, with strongly paralyzed limbs, and hold the tail straightly upwards. Those motions were gradually disappeared within six hours. Thus the secretion of the poison gland of Natrix tigrina showed an acute toxic action on the white mouse. These animals treated with the poison injection were kept alive for more than six months. In the first series of experiment, the mammary tumors, adenocarcinomata were found in 6 females. In the second series of experiment, the secretions were injected into five males and five females and the same tumors were detected in 3 females. The above-mentioned tumors were observed more than six months after the injections. The writer suggests that the secretion of the gland may have some important relation on the development of the mammary tumor of the white mouse.
