In the Japanese waters we have about twenty species of the subfamily Serraninae, of which thirteen species are found in Suruga Bay at present. Most of these species have had no accurate descriptions of their life colours and markings published. Therefore, the author has made the following notes from some fresh state specimens examined by himself. The present paper contains ten species such as Chelidoperca hirundinacea (juvenile), Sayonara satsumae (adults), Tosana niwae (adults), Mustelichthys gracilis (adults), Anthias margaritaceus (adult males and females), Pseudanthias elongatus (juvenile), P. amoenus (adults), Leptanthias kashiwae (adults), Zalanthias azumanus (juvenile), and Franzia squamipinnis (juvenile), whose naturalcolours will be described as accurately as possible. For instance, the coloration shows the difference of sex in Anthias margaritaceus (the "Cherry-Porgy" of Jordan & Richardson): the male is redder and the female is yellower with a distinct black mark on the 7th to 10th spiny dorsal, and the females, moreover, have two colour types: paler (or yellower) and darker (or redder) ones. The remarkable phenomena of striped appearance are recognized on the specimens preserved for many months in formalin, which have nearly uniformly beautiful rosy-red colour of body in life as in cases of Tosana and Franzia. The following species are undoubtedly newly noted in their natural perishable colours: Sayonara satsumae, following Pseudanthias elongatus, and P. amoenus.
