The regulation ability of insect eggs has been studied by many authors, and it is known that the egg type of Calliphora is "determined" and that of Platycnemis "undetermined". In Lepidoptera Maschlanka reported that the type of Ephestia egg is "intermediate". During my study of mutational problem, I obtained some data on the regulation in silkworm eggs. For the experiment I used unhibernating eggs of the stock "p 44", one of the standard stocks in our laboratory, genetically pure for the p, y and many other characters. The eggs were divided into six experiment groups according to the time length from the laying to the treatment: 2, 7, 14, 18, 24 and 40 hours. The treatment was given by a touching of the ignited needle on the anterior or posterior pole of the egg. The room temperature was kept at 25±1℃ during the experiment. At the time of 115 hours after the laying all the eggs thus treated were fixed with Carnoy's solution, and observed as transparent preparations. Under the same amount of destruction the deficiency of somites is greatest in 2 and 7 hour eggs (before the blastoderm stage). This is probably due to the limited distribution of cleavage nuclei in the healthy part. In the 14 hour egg, prospective parts of the embryo are nearly determined and now the determinative role of the egg plasm cannot be distinguished from the individuality of each part of the blastoderm. The high percentage of normal embryos in the eggs treated at 24 hour stage is due to the position of the germ band which is situated comparatively far from both ends of the egg, so that less susceptible to the destruction by the pole burning. Only partial embryos are formed in the eggs treated at 40 hour stage. The involution was often observed also in the partial embryos as is shown in Figs. 2A, 4B and 4C.
