The present experiment was planned to acquire some definite knowledge as to the extent of potential heart-forming materials lying posterior to the heart primordium in chick embryos of five to ten somite stages. For this purpose, an area posterior to the heart primordium was divided into eight pieces by means of five transverse cuts and one longitudinal cut as shown in Fig. 1, and the developmental capacity of each piece thus isolated was tested by transplanting it to the chorio-allantoic membrane of older embryos. A total of sixty five grafts obtained from various levels has been examined histologically. The structures as differentiated and their frequencies are tabulated in Table 1. As is clearly shown by this table, the heart is produced only from levels in which the first somite or the second and third somites are included. In other words, the posterior portion of the potential heart-forming areas extends into the level of the second and third somites, but not into the level of the fourth somite. Materials included within these areas presumably contribute to the formation of the posterior end of the embryonic heart. As to the extent of these areas in medio-lateral directions, the present experiment can not give any information; however, the fact that the cardiac muscles are always situated in the grafts apart from the somite-derivatives, suggests that these are localized somewhat less closely to the somites.
