• In a previous paper (KUME, ′35) the writer has briefly referred to the problem of liverforming potencies around the anterior intestinal portal of the chick embryo. Some additional data concerning the problem and an analysis of the facts are presented in this paper. Generally, the method employed in the present experiment is essentially similar to that adopted previously: briefly stated, this consisted in cutting up the posterior end of heart primordium, including the associated entoderm, into three pieces of nearly same size (Fig.1) and transplanting each piece thus isolated to the chorio-allantoic membrane of 9-day host embryo. As donors, 8-to 14-somite embryos were chosen. Results of 74 grafts examined have been tabulated in Table 1 and an analysis of these follows:- 1. Liver tissues in the grafts, when viewed under a state of living, apear as a well defined greenly colored area in 21 out of 45 cases in which liver was found differentiated. This is probably due to the bile secreted by the hepatic cells into bile capillaries, and may be indicative that the liver is functioning normally under graft condition. 2. As to the frequency of liver in the grafts, the superior capacity of the left omphalomesenteric pieces as compared with the right is demonstrated; namely, the liver is produced nearly 30 per cent from the left pieces (except 9 and 12 somites), while it is nearly 20 per cent from the right (except 9 somites). In the grafts from the middle pieces, the frequency increases as the ageprogresses (from 6.5 per cent at 8-9 somites to 50 per cent at 14 somites). This is interpreted as indicating that the concrescence of bilaterally localized liver-forming areas is gradually progressing as age increases. 3. The regular association of heart and liver (WILLIER and RAWLES, ′31) is again fully corroborated. Concerning the relation between pulsating heart and liver (KUME, ′35), it is shown that the liver develops in the majority of cases (in 43 out of 45) in the grafts which exhibited pulsation.
