The studies on the anopheline mosquitoes in Formosa was commenced in 1901, i.e., shortly after Ross's discovery of th mosquito theory in transmission of malaria. KINOSHITA (1901) was the first reporter of Anopheles in this Island, who described under the name Anopheles funestus (?), a species which is at present known as A. hyrcanus var. sinensis. Since that time knowledge along this line was much supplemented by several investigators. KINOSHITA's report published in 1904, included 7 species, 3 others were added by HATORI (1910-23) and KOIZDUMI (1920-23) described 2 others. Recently TOYOZUMI (1934) found a species in Arisan and the writer (1936) pointed out that there are two forms of anophelines with non-spotted wings. Thus we have now 14 species reported from our country. As to the identification of these species, however, there were much differences of opinion according to authors. The writer, after careful re-examination of many specimens. comparing with those from India and the South Sea regions, and thorough collation of the earlier and latest literature, wishes to present here the following identification. (For identification see text.)
