Highly Efficient,<3 ps All Optical Switching using Four-Wave-Mixing in Laser Diode Amplifiers

Four-wave mixing (FWM) in laser diode amplifiers (LDA's) will be an important technique in ultrafast all optical signal processing. Recently, 100 Gbit/s to 6.3 Gbit/s all optical demultiplexing was successfully demonstrated using FWM in a traveling wave laser diode amplifier (TW-LDA). The feasibility of all optical demultiplexing at a bit rate _> 100 Gbit/s is determined by the switching speed and efficiency of the FWM process in LDA's. In this paper, switching of a cw signal by FWM with a 3.5 ps pump pulse reveals a switching speed of 2.4 ps with 62% efficiency.
