A fingerprint-like pattern composed of fine striae has been observed in each of the outermost squamous epithelium cells of the skin of medaka (Oryzias latipes), the guppy (Lebistes reticulatus), and the swordtail (Xiphophorus helleli). The observations were made with a high-power light microscope on flat-mounted skin pieces which were removed together with the scales and also on decapsuled medaka embryos. In addition, phase contrast microscopy on a replica, on which the osmium-fixed skin surface was printed, proved effective in observing the patterns. In adult medaka, the striae, about 0.4μ think, run roughly concentric at intervals of 0.4μ or more. In the other two species, finer striae are more densely arranged, forming patterns quite similar to those of human fingerprints, that is, "whirl, " "loop, " and "double loop." In the late embryonic stages of medaka, those patterns are only faintly observed and are considerably different from those seen in the adults. Thicker framental striae are irregularly arranged in the intra-and extra-embryonic epithelium cells, which appear much larger than the adult ones. It seems that the pattern in the embryonic stage undergoes a change, after the embryo has hatched out, into the adult type which is probably less changeable. The fact that the patterns can be printed in a replica plate seems to suggest that the figures observed are due to and unevenness of the surface of the outermost squamous epithelium cells. Electron microscopic study of this structure is being undertaken. It also supports the idea that the striae are linear elevations of the cell surface.
