Drosophila nigromaculata is known as one of the dominant species in Hokkaido. Preliminary examinations were undertaken on sexual activity. Culturing was done at 20℃. The time from the egg to the adult was about 21 days. A virgin female with three males were placed in a vial and observations were made until copulation took place. Days required for mating were shown in Table 1. On the 6th day after emergence, most active mating was observed. Forty nine out of fifty four females mated within 7 days. Each of forty young virgin females (7 days after emergence) was placed in a vial with three young males for 6 hours. After copulation, the males were removed from the vial. Numbers of eggs laid, their hatchability, the rate of emergence, and mortality were observed every day for 20 days after mating. As shown in Table 2 Figure 1, the largest number of eggs (17.4 per single female) was observed on the 6th day of a single female culture, and the smallest one (3.3) was found on the 20th day. Mean hatchability of the eggs laid during a period of 20 days was about 63.0 percent. The highest average malue was observed on the 6th day (85.9%), with a remarkable decrease on the 17th day (54.2%). The mortality for each stage is as follows: egg, 37.01%; larva, 17.2%; and pupa, 20.3%. The time required for copulation examined in 100 pairs of flies was about 6'11" on the average, with a range from 1'10" to 8'20".
