It is generally believed that in the Grapsid crab, Sesarma haematocheir (DE HAAN), in spite of its adaptation for life on land, the larval stage still is dependent on life in the ocean and all females carrying eggs are obliged to descend to the seashore for the spawning. Indeed, the fact that this species lays its eggs in fresh-water is so far quite unknown. As is well known, a similar situation is also recognized in the coconut or robber crab, Birgus, the land hermit crab, Coenobita, the terrestrial Gecarcinid crab, Cardiosoma, etc. But the author's observation made at Shimoda, Shizuoka prefecture, in 1963 revealed that Sesarma haematocheir normally spawns not only in the sea but also in various fresh-water streams, such as rivers, ditches, irrigation channels, etc, or in the brackish water of an estuary. The hatched zoeae are carried away by the current to the open sea. In other words, the stock inhabiting catchment areas far from the seas does not descend and migrate to the seashore for oviposition. The crabs assembled on the rocky shores for spawning seem to be all seaside dwellers whose burrows are usually located less than 200m from the high tide mark. It is of particular interest that spawning by basin dwellers of this species, and living independently of the tide, occurs regularly just after sun-set near to the time of the full moon or the new moon similar to the coastal stock. The spawning in fresh-water, or brackish water, is further ascertained for the following species of Sesarminae; S. dehaani, S. intermedia, S. picta and S. bidens. Chasmagnathus convexus and Helice tridens tridens were also examined but the author could not determine where they spawn. In the author's opinion, these two species probably spawn in fresh-water, too, but their period of oviposition is thought to be different from that of the genus Sesarma. The zoea of S. haematocheir was experimentally proved to be an euhyaline organism.
