It has been shown that, when ATP is added to an actomyosin suspension in the presence of EDTA (>0.5mM), no visible change in the colloidal state takes place, but an incomplete superprecipitation proceeds very slowly (Maruyama and Watanabe, 1962). In the present work flow birefringence measurements have revealed that addition of a sufficient amount of Mg^<++> (0.3-0.5mM) induces immediately almost a complete clearing of the EDTA (0.5mM)-ATP (1mM)-actomyosin system, if it is added shortly after addition of ATP. No clearing was observed to occur when MgCl_2 was added after an incomplete superprecipitation had set in. These observations suggest that in the presence of EDTA, only a trace amount of MgATP can act on actomyosin and most of the added ATP exists as an inactive free ATP, and subsequent addition of a sufficient amount of Mg provides the actomyosin with enough MgATP to induce dissociation of actomyosin-clearing response. Naturally it is assumed that lesser amounts of MgATP lead to the onset of superprecipitation (Maruyama and Watanabe, 1962). Furthermore, it has been observed that no sign on clearing, as revealed by the increase in the flow birefringence, was recognizable during the slow process of superprecipitation of the EDTA-actomyosin, which is in good accord with turbidity measuements by a rapis-flow-stop method (Matsunaga and Noda, 1962).
