Monthly investigations were made on the rates of oxygen consumption and on the rates of lactate production by intact crabs under anoxic conditions at the temperature occurring in the habitat at the time of collection. The rates of lactate production under anoxia grew with increasing temperatures from 6.5℃ (Feb.) to 20℃ (Apr.). Between 20℃ (Apr.) and 33℃ (July), almost no thermal dependence was found in the rates of anaerobic metabolism. However, between 30℃ (Sept.) and 10℃ (Dec.), the rates of anaerobic metabolism showed a progressive decrease with decreasing temperature. Consequently, the rates during the fall months were greatly reduced over those in the spring months. In contrast with anaerobic metabolism, there was a low thermal dependence for the rates of oxygen consumption during the fall as well as the summer months. The rates of lactate production as well as the glycogen content in the intact crabs showed great variation among individuals. Lineweaver and Burk plots were applied to the rates of lactate production as a function of glycogen content, and highly positive correlations were found between them in all cases of the experiments. The significance of the function of anaerobic metabolism of Scopimera globosa was discussed in relation to reducing oxygen supply in the habitat.
