The unicellular hatching glands (UHGs) in the intergeneric reciprocal hybrids, Salmo gairdneri×Salvelinus fontinalis (R×B) and Salvelinus fontinalis×Salmo gairdneri (B×R) were studied by electron microscopy. Although the development of the hybrid B×R was arrested at the eye-forming stage, UHGs with seemingly normal morphological appearance had already been differentiated. Comparisons of the morphology of the UHGs among the hybrids and/or their natural breeds, Salmo gairdneri×Salmo gairdneri (R×R) and Salvelinus fontinalis×Salvelinus fontinalis (B×B) revealed that the UHGs of R×B and R×R were ultrastructurally similar to each other, whereas those of B×R differed significantly from either R×R or B×B.
