A Linear Relation between the Egg Size and Average Rate of Embryonic Volume Increase in Sea Urchins

Increase in the embryonic volume during blastula formation of sea urchins was measured. Among five species of sea urchins there was a linear relation between the egg size and average rate of embryonic volume increase. The minimum size of intact sea urchin eggs could be theoretically estimated at that of the egg whose rate of the volume increase is zero. That was about 68μm in diameter.
