The processes of discrimination and elimination of the degenerated "self" cells (DC) in the compound ascidian Botryllus primigenus OKA were observed with an aid of electronmicroscope. DC are the cells which seem to be entering the necrosis in morphology, though their origin is variable. They were spherical cells with a diameter of ca. 5μm and had electron-dense nucleus and cytoplasm, except a few clear spots which had no limited membrane. There were a few inclusions such as mitochondria and lysosome-like vesicles. In the blood vessels, the surface of DC was always coated with micro-fibrous materials (MFM). There seem to be two kinds of discrimination and elimination of DC into the test matrix. (a), the phagocytes selectively engulf DC and insert the cell processes containing DC into the intercellular space of the epidermis, then DC are released in that place. Through the intercellular space DC are brought into the test matrix and the phagocytes go back to the blood vessel. (b), MFM coating the surface of DC combines with the fibrous materials composing the basement layer of the epidermia, by which they are fixed at a place and pushed into the intercellular space of the epidermis, and finally bought into the test matrix. In the test matrix, MFM coating the surface of DC could not be recognized in the both cases.
