Ovigerous females of Eriocheir japonica were collected on April 9, 1971 at the mouth of Masuda River, Fukue City, Nagasaki Pref. Zoeal larvae were obtained in the laboratory after keeping the females in sea water for 21 days. The larvae were kept in an aquarium in the laboratory, fed with mainly Artemia. The larvae passed five zoeal stages and the fifth zoea metamorphosed to the megalopa in about 4 to 5 days. No sixth zoeal stage was observable. It took about 51 days for the full development from the first zoea to the fifth crab stage at room temperature which varied between 9 and 22℃. Thirty larvae of each developmental stage from the first zoea to the fifth crab were examined and their external characters were described. The development of gills had been completed by the megalopa stage and they were all the same with those of the grown-up crab in number. The five developmental stages of the vrab can be distinguished by comparing the following characters in combination; the shape of the pleopod, the shape of the endopod of the maxilla and the ratio of the width of the carapace to the length of the leg.
