The surface structure of E. woodruffi was studied. The results agree for the most part with those of the many previous authors. However, the present work provides new information on the cell surface. There are 10-11 grooves, instead of the so-called ridges, on the dorsal side with a number of cilia arranged along them. Each cilium passes through a ring structure at its base. The silver line system that is generally thought to be the cortical pattern was not detected with the SEM. Instead, the cell surface is covered with many small cortical units. These vary from 1 to 1.5μm in diameter and protrude slightly from the cell surface. Thus, the boundaries between the cortical units make a net of fine meshes with shallow grooves. It is difficult to ascertain the relation between this meshwork and the silver line system. Eighteen cirri are regularly located on the ventral side. The zones of attachment of these cirri to the ventral surface differ from one another in structure, depending upon the cytoplasmic dispositions of the cirri. The frontal and caudal cirri emerge from relatively shallow depressions. The depression is boat shaped in the 3 frontal cirri (cirris number 1, 2, 3), and is round in the others. Five anal cirri emerge from gaps between two high ridges which are parallel to the long axis of the body.
