In Polygonia c-aureum, there are two seasonal forms. Previously we reported that the development of these seasonal (summer and autumn) forms is determined by the day-length and temperature during the larval period and also that the stimuli are conveyed by way of neuroendocrine activity in the brain-corpora cardiaca complex. In the summer form secretory materials accumulated in the main sacs of the accessory gland of the female genital organ -homologous with the colleterial glands in the cockroach- concomitantly with ovarian maturation soon after emergence. In the autumn form, however, the main sacs of the accessory gland are empty and ovarian maturation does not occur until about two to three weeks after emergence. When corpora allata were extirpated on the 2nd day after the 4th larval moulting, the main sacs of accessory glands did not fill with secretory materials after emergence in either the summer form or the autumn form. Further, when corpora allata taken from the summer form female adults had been reimplanted into allatectomized adults, the sacs of the accessory gland were fully filled with secretoly materials on the 5th day after transplatation regardless of the seasonal forms of the recipients. These cases seem to suggest that accumulation of the secretory materials in sacs of the accessory glands may be closely connected with the maturation of the ovary. However, it is clear that the accumulation of secretory materials in a sac of accessory glands is independent of the ovarian maturation because ovariectomy and reimplantation of the ovaries during the larval period have no effect on the accumulation of the materials in the sac of the accessory gland. Further, there is an indication that the secretory materials are mainly produced by the main tubular parts of the accessory gland. A part of the main sac of the accessory gland, which had been transplanted into the abdomen of a summer form adult, contained little secretory material after the transplantation, but the tubular parts of the accessory gland which had been transplanted into the abdomen of another form adult became swollen with secretory material on the 5th day after transplantation. It is concluded that the active corpora allata effect the tubular part of the accessory gland to produce the secretory materials. The effect is independent of the maturation of ovaries and the material produced is transported to and stocked in the main sac of the accessory gland.
