Selective inhibition of nematocyst formation in regenerating hydra was investigated using carbonyl reagents such as hydroxylamine and semicarbazide. When the decapitated animals were exposed to hydroxylamine (1.5×10^<-5>M), their distal regeneration, although delaved, took place, but the tentacles thus formed contained only a small number of nematocysts. Histological studies of these treated regenerates revealed the body cnidoblasts whose further development to elaborate their nematocysts was affected. Such an effect of hydroxylamine on regenerating hydra was abolished if the reagent was applied to amputated animals under the presence of pyridoxal phosphate. Semicarbazide was not effective in causing nematocyst deprivation from the regenerated tentacles.
