The occurrence of copulation in a freshwater planarian, Dendrocoelopsis ezensis collected at November 6th, 1968 was studied under various lighting conditions. In the field, the copulation has been frequently observed during from the end of October to early December. Although the worms measuring longer than 7mm in body length had distinct genital pore, no copulation was observed in worms shorter than 11mm in body length. The incidence of copulation was highest in the worms measuring 18mm in body length. During 16 days' rearing in various lighting conditions at 11℃, the incidence of copulation was higher in the glass vat placed in the dark room than that illuminated with a constant diffused light. Most copulations took place at the evening and the dawn, and a small number of copulation were observed in daytime. The copulating worms separated each other after 2.1-13.9 hours' (5.25 hours in average) contact. It was suggested that the light exerts some inhibitory effects on the copulation and that the darkness does not induce the initiation of copulation in this worm.
