The conditioning technique was employed to investigate odour discrimination in the land snail, Ezohelix flexibilis (Fulton). Some of the plant dours (celery, Apium graveolins L.; cabbage, Brassica oleracea L.; lagwort, Petasites japonicus (Sieb. et Zucc); cucumber, Cucumis sativa L.) were shown to be attractive to the snail by means of the olfactometer. This apparatus was a "T" maze made of lucite plate. The plant odour was blown into one end or both ends of arms and odourized air was exhausted from the middle part of the two arms. In the first experiment, celery odour was paired with punishment (electric shock). Within 5 days of training (2 times of punishment a day) the celery odour was shown to change from 'attractant' to 'repellant' to the snail by the olfactometer test, but the degree of attraction of the control odour (that of cabbage or cucumber) did not change. After 10 days the training was ceased. The avoiding response to celery odour retained through a 50-day period. In the second experiment the lagwort odour was paired with punishment (The control odour was that of cabbage). In this case complete avoiding response could be observed after 2 days training (the number of total punishment applied was four) but the degree of attraction of the control odour did not change. Consequently, the land snail is able to discriminate these plant odours, and the odour discrimination and learning suggest that some ecological phenomena such as finding of foods, homing and mating in the Pulmonata animals can be associated with olfactory cues.
