Classificatory Study of the Japanese Large Noctule, Nyctalus lasiopterus aviator Thomas, 1911

Dimensional characters of 82 large noctules of the Nyctalus lasiopterus group from Japan, two from China and 35 from Europe were studied for a classificatory review. In all skull characters of 51 bats from Sapporo, there were no differences between the two sexes, but the forearm and wing-span of males were longer than in females. In the lengths of the forearm, head and body, tail, ear, tragus, tibia, and 1st finger of the Sapporo's bats, and in all the skull dimensions except the interorbital width, age variations in the adult stage were observed. In the forearm, 3rd finger, 5th finger, tibia, ear, and all skull characters, the European bats were longer than the Japanese bats. In the 1st finger and tragus, the means were shorter than those of the latter. In the ratios of the greatest length of skull and mastoid width to condylobasal length, the European were smaller than the Japanese. They were larger, however, in ratios of the width. and height of brain-case to mastoid width, In the regression lines of the greatest length of skull, mastoid width, brain-case width, and width-across upper molars to the condyobasal Iength, and of the height of the brain-case to mastoid width, there were differences in position between the European and the Japanese. In the regression line of the brain-case width to mastoid width, there was also a difference in position and slope between the two forms. It is suggested that the Japanese large noctule is a species distinct from Nyctalus lasiopterus of Eueope. The Japanese bat should be treated as Nyctalus aviator, not N. lasiopterus aviator. The bats from China and Japan seem to be conspecific.
