Because of the quasi-three level natural of the thulium-doped laser, reabsorption on the laser transition results in a low efficiency and a high threshold for the laser operation. In order to maintain high pumping along the whole fiber without loss on the pumping efficiency. A ring cavity was constructed by polishing one fiber end in 45 degree. The emitting light from this end will be perpendicular to the axis of the fiber by the internal total reflection. Then the pumping and lasing waves can be re-circled in the ring cavity. Because or the unbalanced couple efficiency between the forward and backward directions, unidirectional output can be reached. A maximum output of 2.7 W was generated for a fiber length of 80 cm and a 50% output couple with the launched power of 11.5W. The maximum slope efficiency of 39% was also obtained.
