This paper presents an overview of recent research effort on microwave applications of metamaterial structures, in particular the so called left-handed materials or double negative materials. First some historical remarks are presented. This is followed by explanation of practical realization of metamaterial structures called composite right/lefi-handed (CRLH) structures. A number of practical microwave components with unique properties developed mainly by the authors' group will be listed with brief explanations. Some future prospects of the metamaterials are then presented as a concluding remark.
