We have optimized a reflective STN LCD with single polarizer and 1 or 2 retardation film(s). This mode has been considered ambient light since it gives very different results with in normal incidence, and the polarization change of the incident beam since the polarization gets complicated after the reflection because of single polarizer. Hence this method enables to treat the white light source injected from the surrounding and the polarization change after passing by each layer. In doing this we found out that a pretilt angle come to a critical parameter to do optimization under the oblique incidence on the contrary to the normal incidence. The pretilt angle restricts the maximum contrast ratio of each given phase retardation of LCs.
