The initial weights of adaptive beamformers significantly influence weight convergence and the performance of locking the desired signal for blind adaptations. An omni-directional weight, the eigenvalue of a correlation matrix, and a directional pattern directed to the desired signal have been used as initial weights. However, the eigenvalue method is time consuming, and the arrival direction of the desired signal is not available in mobile communication scenarios. This paper proposes using a retro pattern as the initial weight for adaptive beamformers. The advantage of this proposed method is that the time consuming-calculations usually required to determine the initial weight are not necessary. This paper also compares the desired-signal locking performance between an omni-directional initial weight and a retro initial weight when using blind adaptive beamforming in a Rayleigh fading scenario.
