Some neurons in the MST area have an extraretinal activity during smooth pursuit eye movement. It is currently unknown, however, where this signal originates and what functional role it plays in smooth pursuit. Here, we propose a smooth pursuit model based on the recurrent neural connections of cell population in the MST area, and show the possibility that the non-visual activity in the MST area is generated by the MST own dynamics. Finally, we propose the hypothesis that the MST area integrates the past retinal slip signals and calculates the desired trajectory signals for the inverse dynamics model postulated in the cerebellum for smooth pursuit maintenance.
