In our previous studies, we applied the Karhunen-Loeve expansion to the time-series of average rectified values and mean power frequencies derived from surface myoelectric signals. We found some differences in factor loading between deliberate ramp down contractions and sustained fatiguing contractions. Here, we examined the physiological significance of these differences by analyzing computer-simulated myoelectric signals in relation to MU firing patterns. The results suggest that the time-varying behavior of eigenvectors mainly represents the synchronous oscillation and/or recruitment of MUs, which intensifies in fatiguing muscles to compensate for decreasing force per MU firing.
