The focus of this paper is to examine the relationship between the delayed VEP (Visual Evoked Potential) component in stereopsis and figure-ground processes. Random-dot stereograms with a single rectangular figure defined by crossed disparity were used as visual stimuli. Figure-ground properties were controlled by the figure size relative to background. Two successive negative components were clearly evoked by the stimuli. The second components after a 50-100 ms delay from the initial response were enhanced by the small figure stimuli, but significantly decreased with the figure size and dropped to minimal response level at homogeneous conditions with the full size figure. The same response modulation was observed regardless of the local cues that defined the figure. These result suggest that the delayed component reflects figure-ground processes and contextual modulation might underlie the bimodal VEP in stereopsis. They also suggest the latency period involved in local disparity detection and binocular fusion/rivalry processes.
