This paper proposes a polarization diversity antenna which has the power beam half width of 600 in the horizontal plane for the cellular base station antenna. A compact diversity antenna element consists of a printed dipole for vertical polarization and a patch with a hole for horizontal component. We analyzed this antenna by the FDTD method, and confirmed its characteristics by measurements. We also investigated the optimum parameters to obtain the required horizontal half width and small mutual coupling between antenna elements.
