Up to now, mode analysis approach based on the wave-guide theory has been the mainstream of propagation prediction in tunnels. When a shape of the tunnel cross section is geometrically simple, a rigorous solution is derived using this approach. When the shape comes to be complex, however, it is difficult to solve the problem analytically. The ray-tracing method based on geometrical optics has recently drawn attention as a way for predicting propagation characteristics in the environments, such as outdoor or indoor, where the layout are complex. This method enables to predict propagation characteristics by deriving only a geometrical tracing of the rays between transmitter and receiver. There is, therefore, some possibility for easily predicting propagation characteristics in tunnels with any cross section shape by using the ray-tracing method. In this paper, the prediction effectiveness and accuracy in ray-tracing method is discussed based on the comparison made between the results of ray-tracing and of the actual measurement. To that end, the relationship between maximum number of reflections and distance from transmitter to receiver is taken into account, in addition to the size and shape of the tunnel cross section.
