A maximum diameter (D_<max>) of raindrop should be assumed when rainfall rate (R) is estimated from the differential reflectivity (Z_<DR>) and the horizontal reflectivity (Z_H) measured with dual-polarization radar. If the assumed D_<max> is different from actual D_<max>, the estimated R contains errors. Using distrometer data, it was found that Z_<DR> correlates with D_<max>, and it was verified that when D_<max> is adaptively determined by an empirical relationship between Z_<DR> and D_<max>, errors in estimated R can be reduced.
