A high permittivity LSE-NRD guide was applied to a pla-nar antenna at 60 GHz. Emphasis was olaced on compatibility between thehigh permittivity LSE-NRD euide and the conventionally used low oermit-tivity LSM-NRD suide. Performance of the transition between two suchtypes of NRD guides was ootimized by using an electromagnetic simu-lator and the validity was experimentally demonstrated. A simple radia-tor, consisting of a tapered high permittivity LSE-NRD auide was fabri-cated and evaluated as to radiation characteristics. Since the radiator hasa broad radiation pattern, it was employed in a primary radiator of a two-dimensional oarabolic reflector to develop a new type of folded olanar an-tenna at 60 GHz. This olanar antenna has a double-layered structure. ln theupper layer, a metalized dielectric substrate with a slotted array is excitedby a rectangular-shaped oversized waveguide, and in the lower layer, anoffset oarabolic reflector is fed by the radiator. Measurement showed thehalf-power beam width of the fabricated antenna to be 2.5 degrees in the Eand H olanes・ respectively, and the sain to be 35.3 dBi, thus indicating thata good Dentil beam antenna was successfully developed in this manner.
