Analysis of Superconducting Second-Order MASH Sigma-Delta Modulator

We have investigated effects of frequency characteristics of a transformer in a superconducting second-order cascaded (MASH) lowpass sigma-delta modulator. The superconducting transformer connects two constituent single-loop modulators. Output of an integrating inductor of the first-stage modulator is magnetically fed to an integrating inductor of the second-stage modulator through the transformer. The quantization noise of the first-stage modulator is canceled with digital filters with proper transfer functions. Any irregular frequency characteristic of the transformer may cause degradation of overall performance of the MASH modulator. However, analytical calculation of the transfer function showed that the signal-to-noise ratio is not severely degraded if the transformer has a first-order lowpass filter characteristic with a moderate cutoff frequency when the oversampling ratio is sufficiently large.
