This paper proposes an adaptive MC-CDMA system for broadband mobile satellite communications. The proposed system can fully utilize high degree of freedom offered by multi-carrier schemes, and thus can provide more efficient adaptive transmissions. We assumed multi-beam geo-stationary satellite, and focused on the service provided via forward link. Although, typically, line-of-sight (LOS) conditions prevails in satellite systems, we cannot ignore the link quality degradation due to multipath propagation when we consider a large bandwidth of several tens of MHz for high rate services and services for users even under no LOS conditions. This leads to using a MC-CDMA transmission in mobile satellite systems in spite of its inherent disadvantages. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed adaptive scheme with the synchronous system achieves 100 % enhancement in capacity. In order to overcome existing problems of multi-carrier schemes, we also propose several novel algorithms to reduce signal distortions due to high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) in the MC-CDMA. These algorithms include a scrambling technique and a partial transmit sequence technique to reduce PAPR, and a predistortion technique to linearize high power amplifier.
