Apheresis devices are classified into two models: intermittent centrifuge and continuous centrifuge. Devices also use single-needle line and dual-needle lines for blood access and return. Characteristically, the dual-needle devices need a relatively smaller volume of blood to fill the extracorporeal space and to produce platelet products with a low number of contaminating leukocytes. A reservoir room has recently been added, and this invention makes it possible to draw donor blood from the reservoir as blood returns through a single line. The applications of apheresis include the harvest of peripheral blood stem cells/progenitor cells, donor lymphocyte for post-BMT-relapsed cases, and granulocyte collections for severe and uncontrollable infections.
