In order to cope with the recent speeding-up of seagoing vessels, high powered engines are being installed, and among those, the diesel engines are commonly used from the economy standpoint of fuel consumption. The exhaust gas noise of the larger diesel engines are in the low frequency range, and since its sound level is pretty high, the cabines in the neighbourhood of the funnel are affected by this characteristic low frequency sound. Together with the actual analysis of the exhaust gas noise, model test of a muffler with a consideration of back pressure charactaristics was conducted, and a muffler with internal pipes was made as the result of this test as reported in this paper. In case of a low-pass filter type muffler, the cut-off frequency has to be reduced below the fundamental frequency of the exhaust gas noise which world result the length of expansion chamber becoming too long for installation in limited space of a vessel, so a muffler of combined exhaust gas boiler type is being considered at present.
