The history of translation of the Japanese lyrics into Russian dates from the beginning of the XX century, and it goes without saying that during these almost hundred years the mode of translation has undergone a lot of changes. Those changes, of course, may be analyzed as variations and developments of ars poetica, but in this paper we mean to treat them in the broader cultural context and to establish their connections with the paradigms of the Russian culture of the corresponding periods. The postmodern criticism claims that translation is just the same kind of interpretation of text as quotation, plagiarism, dramatization, parody, borrowing of plots etc. We are not going that far, but the fact stands that the borderline between the notion of the original text and translation is not so absolute as it may seem, there are periods when some authors make their original works look like translations and vice-versa; sometimes we face even much more complicated cases. For the aims of the present study it appeared to be convenient to use the concept of "the text boundaries" as an indicator of the changes in the attitude of the Russian culture towards itself and towards the foreign texts that were being translated. In some periods of the literary history the concept of the text as a unit begins to shift, and the borders of the text become very wide, including some extraneous elements, in the other periods the text space shrinks and changes the configuration, rejecting many of its usual attributes. In order to analyze these shifting boundaries and drifting notions of the text in the sphere of translation we took the most significant or remarkable examples of translation. Among them was a little known book of Yamaguchi Moichi "Impressionism as a Leading Trend of the Japanese Poetry" published in St. Petersburg in 1913. To introduce the book was the additional aim of the work.
