In the OCS text of the Evangels, which is very faithful to the Greek original and strictly follows canonical patterns in translating verbal forms, present tense forms of perfective verbs usually correspond to the Greek future and have future meaning. This situation is the same as in East and West Slavonic languages. There is, however, an innegligible number of present forms of perfective verbs which are used to translate the Greek present and therefore cannot be taken to have future meaning. The present paper has been devoted to investigating such present forms of perfective verbs from a viewpoint of text linguistics. As a result it has become clear that they are devided into two subtypes: (1) those appearing in stories narrated in the present tense and denoting foregrounded events, (2) those appearing in the descriptive text and indicating temporal relationship between the condition denoted by the verb in the protasis and the result denoted by the verb in the apodosis. A view that OCS translator(s) rendered the Greek original into OCS mechanically is rejected. It seems that OCS translator(s) paid sufficient attention to the semantics of the text it self.
