Over-all pitch, which is defined here as a steady pitch of frequency modulated tones other than a dynamic pitch change, may be perceived through a certain auditory spatio-temporal averaging mechanism. On this line, a model for determining over-all pitch of short FM tones was presented. The model constitutes the central feature that the frequency corresponding to over-all pitch is the one locating on a single maximum of the weighted excitation pattern at the burst end of FM tone; the weighting is larger to the portion of FM tone closer to its burst end. Applying a single tuned characteristic as the excitation pattern and an exponential decay type of weighting function to the model, some calculations were compared with the results from the pitch-matching experiments for four different types of frequency change. The agreement between the calculations and the measurements was generally good.
