Depending on the correlation table recently proposed by Dr. N. IKEBE et al, the writers tried to study the deposition rate of the Neogene formations in the sedimentary basin along the western coast of Northeast Japan. For the examination of historical variations of the deposition rate, some standard wells and surface sections were selected. Isopach maps of two horizons (Late Miocene and Early Pliocene) were employed for the investigation of areal variations of the deposition rate. Deposition rate was obtained from existing thickness of each formation and the estimated deposition time which was read from the above mentioned correlation table, and was shown in meters per million years. Some conclusions brought from their study are as follows: (1) Deposition rate, especially its historical variations, is considered to be very interesting for geological development study. (2) Akita area is different from Niigata area from the view point of deposition rate. They may form two subbasins in this sedimentary basin. (3) Two types of changes in the deposition rate through Late Pliocene to Pleistocene exist and are remarkable. One of them is a "plain type" which shows a deposition rate increasing with time and the other is a "hill type" with a decreasing deposition rate.
