Many cities of Japan are located on the grounds which are composed of the Quatemary deposits. Therefore, the geotechnical defects in urban areas are mostly resulted by the insufficient evaluations of the bearing capacities of subsoils to structures, the subsidence of the grounds and the collapse of sandy gravels and the boiling of the saturated loose sands due to the seepage pressure. This paper describes two examples of the urban geotechnical problems. One is the foundation problem for the biaducts of the Keiyo railroad line under construction along the site of the north coast of Tokyo Bay. In consequence of many investigations and comparisons with different types of foundations for the thick weak grounds which have settled due to consolidation about 10 cm in year, long friction piles are selected as the foundation of these railroad biaducts. The other is the dewatering problem relating with the construction of the huge underground railroad station in the Shinkansen Ueno Terminal, where large pits are excavated in the pleistocene layers composed of saturated sands, gravels and silts.
