The Asahi Massif is a large upheaval zone in the so called "Green tuff region" of Northeastern Japan. The Neogene System of the western slope of the Massif overlies unconformably the Palaeozoic System, granites and the Asahi rhyolites. The stratigraphic succession, litho-facies and fossils of the Neogene System are shown in the following table. [Table] The Lower Miocene formation was formed in a non-marine environment. The first marine transgression in Miocene time occurred at the Asahi stage (Middle Miocene). The Sumikawa and the Kitaoguni formations are related to the structure of WNW-ESE〜NW-SE directions which are controled by the structure of the basement complex. Graben-like sedimentary basins of the Asahi stage might be trending in NNE-SSW〜NE-SW directions, which were generated in Miocene.
